Ugh! We’ve been so busy that we never actually posted our original thoughts about Faith, the world’s First Plus Positive Superhero who will have her own movie produced by Sony Pictures. Plus women (and women in general) are finally slowly gaining ground when it comes to positive representation in movies, comics, and TV. This is not unlike other minority groups (wait… .don’t plus women make up the US female majority? Yes, but they are still considered a minority due to their scarce representation). Black Panther has been touted as one of the first black positive movies that depicts a prominent minority group in a position of wealth and class, as most movies featuring black main characters come from poor upbringings and change social class (or don’t at all). This is not our opinion, it has been proven statistically over and over that minority based movies have been featuring low socioeconomic status characters for years.

This summer, there’s been news that big-budget superhero movies are about to get more body diverse, too — Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is moving forward with an adaptation of Valiant Comics superhero story “Faith.” We wished Chrissy Metz, who has said she WANTS to play a superhero one day would be cast. But, there’s been no news to support that! Let’s ignore the awful comments her video received when she said that, shall we?

“Faith” will be the first ever plus-size superheroine to get her own movie. Yes! If you’re not caught up on the comics, here’s what you should know about Faith.”Faith” is the story of Faith Herbert, a lifelong comic book fan, sci-fi geek and fantasy lover who always read about superheroes and loved them. Then one day she got superpowers of her own, and got to be the superhero she always dreamed of. Far from being a brooding or tortured hero, Faith is bubbly and positive. She’s out on her own as an adult for the first time in a new city, trying to make her mark on the world as a person and as a superhero. And Faith’s powers are pretty cool! She has psychic powers, and can fly — as well as utilize something called a “companion field” We love this!

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has begun work on a live-action film that would focus on the story of Faith, also known as Zephyr. Faith’s story has been particularly important to readers, given that’s she depicted as being plus-size in the comic books and is a cheery character who loves nerdy things, comic books included.

Judy Houser, who writes “Faith,” explains,

“She’s what is called a “psiot,” so her powers are psychically based. In the previous Valiant series “Harbinger,” her powers were unlocked by a fellow psiot named Peter Stanchek. She joined up with Peter and a group of other teenage psiots, who called themselves the Renegades, who fought to bring down the corporations that were trying to manipulate the psiots for their own purposes.”

Making a movie that stars a plus-size female hero is a crucial step towards making the superhero genre more inclusive and body positive. We love this, because believe it or not, we’ve pushed to get plus fiction stories told for years. The number one criticism? “Hey, we love the story, can you make the love interest/main character thin? Or perhaps make them unhappy?” Yeah… no, thank you.

The superhero was introduced in the first issue of popular comic book series Harbinger, which is about a group of super-powered teen outcasts.

But, now there’s even better news! Faith was later given her own limited series, aptly-titled Faith and will now have her own miniseries, “Dreamside” released this September! Is it a coincidence that her background images are mostly purple? We hope not! Painting the world purple, one image at a time!
