A conversation is erupting around Revealing Plus Size Outfits… and it’s around the best person possible
For those who haven’t read the articles or seen social media about it, of late, Lizzo (@lizzobeeating) has been criticized recently for wearing a thong-like pair of panties under chaps at a basketball game. She was also seen twerking.
People are criticizing the singer/rapper for:
- Twerking near children
- Wearing a thong in public
- “Seeking attention” at a sports game
There has been a lot of controversy surrounding what has been said about Lizzo, both on the positive and negative sides. Critics are saying she has no place wearing those outfits…. let alone in public. While others have been saying that these criticisms have everything to do with her size.
“If you have to preface your criticism of Lizzo with, “it’s not because she’s fat and Black,” chances are you feel small type of way about fat Black women,” one tweet read. “And I’mma just leave it there.”
– Jasmyn Be Knowing, an Editor at Netflix
Now, to our statement. We do believe that this conversation very much needs to happen. Lady Gaga and other celebrities have worn similar (if not more revealing) outfits. And, we do believe that Lizzo is without a doubt one of the best people to spearhead or be the center of it.
Why? Here are some reasons:
- Lizzo has been listed and mentioned in multiple publications as 2019’s top entertainer
- Lizzo is one of the most prolific and popular plus-size humans in media today
- Lizzo is also a brazen rap artist and is a super positive/strong empowered woman
We are not positive that Lizzo can handle the criticism. But, we are hoping she can and fire back. So far, Lizzo hasn’t said much. But, many, like the Houston Rocket Cheerleaders (who have asked her to dance with them) have shown their support. So, there may not be a need for her to respond with a lot.
Lizzo did respond with the following:
“This is who I’ve always been. Now everyone’s looking at it and your criticism can just remain your criticism,” she said. “Your criticism has no effect on me, negative criticism has no stake in my life, no control over my life, over my emotions.”
– Lizzo
We think this is a larger conversation that definitely needs to keep happening. And, we hope that she remains a vocal, or at least visual representative of plus sized humans being more liberal with their clothing choices and the way they display themselves in media outlets. This is why Bold exists. So, we are so proud of you, Lizzo, for being BOLD!
