Happy Bold Boss Wednesday! This week, we are chatting with #BoldBoss Ameilla Thompson Dillon about the modeling industry, fat acceptance, and her journey with self-love. Ameilla will be hosting this week’s #BoldBossLive on Thursday at 9 PM ET over on Bold’s Instagram. You don’t want to miss out!
Bold Magazine: What type of modeling do you do? How did you get started as a model? What’s an average workweek like for you?
Ameilla Thompson Dillon: How I got started modeling was simply by going to local additions, and any modeling events in my surrounding areas, even if it wasn’t in my category to try out. A workweek for me would be, work in the am, homework daily (yes still in school) helping my daughters with their school work and activities. And working out daily to stay healthy. Downtime I focus a lot on posting and engaging with my fellow followers who support me on social media.
Bold Magazine: What Makes you BOLD?
Ameilla Thompson: What makes Ameilla bold is being able to feel amazingly beautiful in every way. Not accepting a no for an answer. Will always push to get that yes. Being bold is freedom of lies. Being able to be you and not hide what god created. Being original, but fabulous and stepping out of that box. Being bold is not being scared to be different and spontaneous and phenomenal.
Bold Magazine: Describe your personal style. What are some of your signature colors, styles, and accessories?
Ameilla Thompson: My styles would have to be sleek black formal gown dresses. My favorite color is purple. I absolutely love anything that looks or feels like fall. I don’t wear much jewelry, but when I do it’s loud, fun, and bold!
Bold Magazine: What are some tips you’d like to share with aspiring influencers or models?
Ameilla Thompson: Tips I have would be to make sure you always do what’s best for you. Always do what makes you happy. Never Settle for less. Never be afraid to show your true self. Go for it, get as much experience as possible. It’s much more precious than money.
Bold Magazine: What’s your family and personal life like? Who are your best supporters?
Ameilla Thompson: My supporters are my two young daughters, my husband, and of course my family. My family is nothing like normal. It’s never a dull moment in our household. My personal life is a bit crazy, I’m like a hamster running on a circle wheel, I never stop. I’m always on the go until I get to where I need to be, achieve my accomplishments.
Bold Magazine: What does being an influencer or model mean to you? What do you hope it means to others?
Ameilla Thompson: What does an influencer mean to me? I believe it means to represent yourself and to have others admire you, or look up to you for all the good things they may see in you.
Bold Magazine: What are your goals and dreams as an influencer or model? What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Ameilla Thompson: Making a change on a complete stranger is a win for sure. Showing others if I can do it, so can you. My goals are to be the best of me. Live my best life until I leave this earth. I’ve always wanted to model for torrid, or Layne Bryant. The most important goal of mine is to work hard to sign with Dorothy combs. I see her models and I watch them all, I take notes for sure. I’m amazingly surprised at myself for getting this far. From runways and being apart of different events has been such a great opportunity. Being picked to wear multiple designer clothing means so much to me. But most of all being noticed and picked by model, and tv star, Cynthia Bailey agency for the second round. Although I didn’t get picked for the final round, that doesn’t mean I will stop.
Bold Magazine: How have you seen the fashion, retail, or modeling industry change in the past decade – specifically with regards to diversity and inclusivity? What work still needs to be done?
Ameilla Thompson: Currently I feel like I’m still seeing not enough beautiful plus-size women. Typically where you don’t see us often on non plus size organizations. I do feel promoting plus size still has some ways to go to be accepted in the modeling industry. But being a bold boss and getting chosen is a perfect way to do this, so thank you bold mag!!!
Bold Magazine: What are some things you’ve noticed in the world that you’d like to advocate to change?
Ameilla Thompson: With everything going on in this world I try to stay positive and focus on the bigger picture. I would love to see more love than hate, there is so much tension in the air, and some of us get sidetracked on what we are here to do. I would also love to see more women to women’s support. I know we are all wanting to be at the top, and succeed. But I know we can make a difference together.
Bold Magazine: What does beauty mean to you?
Ameilla Thompson: Beauty means feeling comfortable in your own skin. Appreciating all of your imperfections and flaws. Feeling good about yourself, and embracing that empowerment.
Bold Magazine: What does fat acceptance mean to you? Body positivity?
Ameilla Thompson: What fat acceptance means to me is, learning how to unpack the prejudice surrounding fatness that gets drilled into our minds. Reclaiming your body. My body image from then to now has changed a lot. I went from wearing fully clothed, all color black, oversized outfits to, fitted perfectly, but comfortable clothing. I got so comfortable with my body that my second shoot was in my bra and thong. And I felt so amazing. I love who I am and how far I have come.
Bold Magazine: Who are some humans who inspire you?
Ameilla Thompson: Women who inspire me down this path were of course my mother, my grandmother (r.i.p) and models, Erica Lauren, and Tabria Majors. I would love to do a live with her. I have so many questions for her and would like to know more about how she got to where she is now.
Bold Magazine: What are some unique hobbies you have?
Ameilla Thompson: I honestly love to collect anything Harry Potter, I read books daily, the book I am currently reading now is The Glass Hotel by Emily St John Mandel. And constantly practicing in the mirror my looks, walk, poses, you name it I do it. Practice definitely makes perfect!
Bold Magazine: Do you have a message you want to leave with our readers?
Ameilla Thompson: I want to let every beautiful woman know that’s been trying to pursue in this industry is to be yourself, love yourself. Continue to live your best life like there is no tomorrow. Always stay humble and celebrate those small winnings, because that leads to success! Never stop because you received a no, that no will turn into a yes.
